Nobody wants to think about their toilets, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Toilets are like any other mechanical device and are as prone to breakdowns as any other device.

Most homeowners must replace their toilet every 10 to 15 years, though a high-quality toilet that’s received excellent care can last up to 50 years. 

Here are the signs that it’s time to replace one of yours. 

#1) Your toilet keeps running.

Having to “jiggle the handle” to stop the running every now and then might just mean needing a flapper replacement. But if you’ve already tried the cheap replacement (you can get a new flapper for less than $10), the problem might be the pump. 

A pump replacement is an option for some toilets, but not all of them. Sometimes, the toilet in question is just too old, and they don’t make the pump in question anymore. When that happens, a replacement might be the only option. 

#2) Your seat keeps popping off.

If your toilet seat keeps popping off, you may have the wrong toilet for your household needs.

A taller ADA toilet with a higher weight capacity can withstand heavier members of your household and heavier guests. It’s also easier on the knees if anyone in your home is elderly or has joint problems.

#3) You are constantly fighting clogs and overflows.

One or two clogs or overflows mean you have an unusual situation on your hands that needs a one-time fix. 

Constant clogs and overflows tell you your toilet’s infrastructure is no longer up to the challenge. 

#4) The toilet flushes poorly or won’t flush at all.

Flush failures could mean issues with your sewer line, or it could mean there are mechanical failures within the toilet itself. 

Sometimes, flush problems are easily fixed, as they can also mean clogged siphon jets or ring holes. But you might need a new toilet if the problems keep returning. 

#5) Your toilet leaks.

Leaks could hint at broken flanges, poor seals, and cracks somewhere in the structure of your toilet. Leaks waste water, create unsanitary conditions and can threaten floors and walls with water damage. It’s important to address them right away. 

If you’re lucky, you just need a new wax ring. If not, you’ll need a new toilet, especially older ones.
